Seattle DUI Attorney | Miguel Cabrera Cited for DUI

2009 October 6

In what seems to be at least a weekly occurrence, another sports star has been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), this time right before a critical series with his team that had major playoff implications. The good news, for the team, at least, was that the incident occurred on an off day, meaning Cabrera didn’t have to miss any time. The bad news, for Cabrera, is that his blood alcohol level was reported to be .26, more than three times the legal limit. And the good news for me? I have something to put into my Seattle DUI attorney news blog!

The incident, according to ESPN.com, was the result of a night out with teammates that got a little too frisky. According to the story, most experts believe alcohol leaves the body at about a rate of .015 per hour, meaning it would have taken Cabrera more than 17 hours to completely sober up. The problem with these calculations is that puts him through game time by quite a bit (but, in truth, haven’t we all gone to work a little hung over before?).

Regardless of his blood alcohol level, Cabrera stated that he thought he would have no problem focusing on the game and would be able to play at a high level (just so you know, that night he didn’t do so well, going 0-5 – but, he’s made up for it with a good game today, when it matters most, in the tiebreaker game with the Minnesota Twins).

For Cabrera, this will probably just be a small bump in the road. He’s got the money to hire the best Seattle DUI attorney available, and there are ways to nullify even a high breathalyzer test result. In the end, I expect to hear Cabrera pleading guilty to a lesser charge and receiving a fine or community service or pleading guilty to the DUI, again with a fine and/or community service. He probably won’t be able to drive for a while and will be embarrassed by what has happened, but in time a new story will break and this mistake will be forgotten like all others before it.

Bottom line, as is always the case, is this – a DUI can happen to anyone, at any time. Be prepared for a DUI by knowing what to do if pulled over by the police, what information to give them, and what information to withhold. Know your rights regarding field sobriety tests and breathalyzer tests, and call a Seattle DUI attorney the moment you think something might be going wrong.
